Assim concluo eu. Pois esses sentimentos inconscientemente, povoaram a minha vida nessa fase.

Terminado o secundário, distanciado desse complexo social - pais, colegas, escola - esse sintoma desapareceu. Fui para algo novo. Diferente. Mas mais eu. Recuperando a minha confiança.

”This is not Goa!”.

EN

I was sitting there, ready to begin a meeting that had been scheduled with the architect and the municipal inspector responsible for the area where I have a plot of land. A possible illegal structure had been detected on our property, and we were there to clarify the situation.

I soon noticed that the palms of my hands were sweaty.

Suddenly, there I was, ready to look at the plans relating to our piece of land and determine their legality. I then noticed the sweat on the palms of my hands — something that had not happened to me since secondary school. Back then, I remember it happening frequently. I assume the conclusion that I suffered from this symptom of sweaty palms because I was constantly feeling under evaluation, and that some kind of stress inside my body was dysregulating my nervous system. School, home, family, sports training, the social environment… insecurity, a lack of determination, and a disconnection from my inner joy and sense of purpose generated this symptom. This is my conclusion, anyway. Those feelings unconsciously populated my life during that phase.

After finishing secondary school, and distancing myself from that social complex — parents, classmates, school — the symptom disappeared. I moved on to something new. Something different. But more myself. I regained my confidence.

Later, I began noticing the symptom occasionally, whenever I was around someone I liked and wanted to impress. Naively believing that I had to impress them, and also feeling that I was being evaluated, the symptom of sweaty palms would appear.
And there I was, in a meeting room, with the projector switched on, inside a public municipal building that somehow reminded me of the energy of public school. The architect opened an online map and zoomed in on our plot of land, looking at it from above and analysing what could be seen.

I was under evaluation.

I am authorised by the Sharath Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute to teach. The way I was assessed in order to receive this authorisation consisted of spending, altogether, at least around six months studying and practising alongside our teacher. In this way, the assessment took place continuously. There was, in fact, space to really focus on and integrate the challenges and lessons.
It was a way of being assessed that did not invade my personal space for development. The assessment took place over time, day after day, grounded in the relationship created between teacher and student — the true meaning of parampara, the transmission from one person to another.

I believe that from the very first moment my feet touched the shala at KPJAYI, and our teacher — Sharathji Jois — laid his eyes on me in his office, simply for registration, the assessment had already begun.

I presented my documents, filled out the registration form, received instructions about what to do next — even how we were expected to hold, handle and hand over the money — and, of course, whether the pile of Indian rupee notes was correct, since payments were accepted only in cash.
I always felt this with Guruji. His attentive and penetrating gaze seemed to look right through us, looking at us in order to truly know us.
Even with the large number of students, I felt that he tried to look at each one of us simply to see who we were on this path and how we carried ourselves when facing challenges. He expected humility, empathy towards others, effort, authenticity and honesty from us.
Without a doubt, I believe he was looking for the integration of the ethical and social values of Yoga: the Yamas and Niyamas.

Through observing our behaviour in his teaching environment, I believe he perceptively assessed how we maintained respect for everything: for strangers, for colleagues from cultures different from our own, for our friends, for colleagues who were famous, for our families, for the assistants, as well as for the teaching method he transmitted to us, our personal practice, ourselves and our teacher.

But as his students, I always felt that we were also being observed in how we maintained respect for things beyond his classes: for the traditions of Yoga, for the local culture and customs, since we would be spending long periods of study in India.

“This is not Goa!”

The assessment, of course, also took place every day during practice in the shala with him, always attentive to the details of our technical execution and observing how much effort we put in.

But he also noticed whether we arrived on time, too early or too late for our allotted practice time, and with what disposition we left when facing his gaze as we stepped out of the shala — literally, each and every one of us.
Whether all these factors weighed equally in Guruji’s decision to grant us Authorisation to teach Ashtanga Yoga, I do not know.

But I am convinced that he took all of this into consideration and that, without many conversations, he ultimately formed his own judgements about us that came very close to our true character.

One of the things I took away from these years of study with Guruji Sharath Jois is that true learning is integral, holistic and non-segmented. We may have all our strengths and weaknesses, but that does not absolve us from the responsibility of continuing to improve.

If I were ever to conduct a Yoga teacher training programme, I would certainly feel that a long-term and continuous approach to training and assessment, accompanying and gradually guiding participants, would make the most sense to me — just as it made sense to my teacher and Guru, Sri Sharath Jois.
Throughout all those months of study, I did not experience nervous sweating in the palms of my hands.

The nervousness of being assessed arose in circumstances of occasional, punctual evaluation. But because I was immersed in a process of continuous assessment, I accepted the invitation simply to be who I was.
And by being who I was, I could move at my own pace, learning and naturally accepting challenges gradually, as I became ready for them.
Without forcing the learning process, and honouring my own time and abilities, my time studying with my Guruji did not create the stress of having to succeed — buried under the Tyranny of Should.
This way of authorising teachers also reflects the traditional teaching of Ashtanga Yoga through Mysore-style classes, in which each practitioner learns at their own pace and reaches different levels of accomplishment progressively.
On the one hand, I was there at the Ashtanga Yoga Institute primarily for personal development. On the other, there was no guarantee of when or how I would receive any certification.
And these two factors were integral to my absorption of the techniques and knowledge, without putting the cart before the horse.

They allowed for a greater and more complete integration of Yoga, and of the practice of Ashtanga Yoga, into my life.
Under continuous assessment, I was able to demonstrate consistency to myself, and to train not only my body but also my mind to immerse myself deeply in a way of life in which Yoga happens uninterruptedly.

This is how it was designed to affect human life.

Partes de Nós [PT]

http://ashtangayoganazare.weebly.com/blog/partes-de-nos

http://ashtangayoganazare.weebly.com/blog/partes-de-nos#comments

Uncategorized

O resultado é sempre surpreendente e gratificante.

PRATYAHARA [PT & EN]

http://ashtangayoganazare.weebly.com/blog/pratyahara-pt-en

http://ashtangayoganazare.weebly.com/blog/pratyahara-pt-en#comments

Uncategorized

2:54 Yoga Sutras

EN

You all must have already pass through that moment in which thought stops in between one action and another. It is a pause of the flow of our consciousness and that moment can be called as Pratyahara. In that context the memory that comes is of one day at night in the square of the city where I did University, where my exhale of air was warm in the cold night and it formed an hot carbon cloud. That warm cloud was flouting through the air. I remember being in that square right after one of my first yoga sessions , coming out into the cold night coming from the session and simply contemplating that hot exhalation that flouted through the air formed by me. The moment that even my own vision on that cloud had lost relevance, living this sensation of almost inverting the way of the senses towards inside. An oportunidade that presents itself between thoughts and actions. And it was exactly in that situation that I was: I had just finished a yoga session and was free until the next appointment.

That moment between two events of my life gave me a time to contemplate my mind and my state. For sure that that moment didn’t evolve to something more deep, and didn’t extend itself to eternity, but I recall that sensation having been lived and pure. It placed me in that moment to being completely open and conscious of what I am living in the ‘here and now’. In that sense Pratyahara is without a doubt an important stepfather the eight steps º Patanjali, that is similar to Nirodha Samādhi which is explained in detail in the third chapter, Vibhuti Pāda of the Yoga Sutras. Overall my one of a kind experience lived in the square of the university city where I studied, didn’t pass as a casual event, that comforted me and left me being just me. Didn’t need to know or study what Pratyahara means and is, to live its experience. And only years later could I remember this moment and other similar ones and identify them as obvious, or not so obvious, events of my mental process.

Of the eight (astau) steps/ limbs (angas) to Yoga of Patanjali, Pratyahara is the fifth step. Pratyahara is not just the fifth step, it is not just the step that comes after. Pratyahara is a portal between Bahiranga and Antaranga, between the steps that focus on the exterior and those that focus on the interior. Because it is inside that it will show our full potential, our true nature and all its richness. Pratyahara is the passage from one mode of practice to the other. And there wouldn’t be any Yoga if this second wouldn’t be considered. Yoga happens inside of us and on the way we can become sensible and apply all the previous steps, but when arriving the ‘final sprint’ not observing readily Pratyahara, Yoga will never find it roots in the intimate of our being. In the long-term Pratyahara is a state of consciousness very important for a Yoga path, and the dive within you starts here and now.

2:54 Yoga Sutras
svaviśayāsamprayoge chittasyasvarūpānukara ivendriyānām pratyāhārah

Pratyahara is the return of consciousness to its own shape (shape less), through the means of withdrawal of the senses of the mind from their respective objects. By other words, we can resume the turning of the sense (the six senses: tact, smell, hearing, vision and taste) to the interior. Maybe nulling the perceptive capacities and culminating together, six, in one extra-sensorial sense internal and prior.

As I referred, at the start of this text, Pratyahara- as is all first 5 steps of Patanjali - they are in a way accessible and often show up spontaneously in the life of all of us. Perhaps it occurs - in the casa of Pratyahara - at the end of a party returning home, at some point in a walk in Nature, , at a break from work… in ambiences that allow turning off the interaction of our senses with the exterior and turning them inward, towards ourselves, at times with a sensation of comfort and safeguard. In this context Pratyahara shows up spontaneously and not in a systematic way, as a part of a system of personal evolution and self-development. In that way Pratyahara is suggested in the Ashtanga Yoga of Patanjali: Pratyahara as a doorway to our inner potencial and connect with whole.

This sighting of spontaneous Pratyahara or Nirodha Samādhi in our life, takes from us the control over our personal development. Only Kriya Yoga of Patanjali - tapas, svadhyaya and iśwara pranidhana - to cultivate control in this conscious development of self realization.

Pratyahara is as for all great kingdoms, but to the inner kingdom. Is a door, a gate, a portal. And as any great entrances to palaces, they are always protected by their gate keepers, guardians, and in the case of Pratyahara the senses are the guardians. The Self that is behind the senses has to cross from objects interacted by the senses externally, back to the inner Self, absent of such identification with senses - the inner kingdom. And in the journey of yoga described by Patanjali the objects are used and included in the journey of self- development to infuse the Self with the cosmos, the absolute, the whole universe. It isn’t a path of despising the material means but of intelligently use the matter as seed, anchor of the mind and consciousness to attain that potential. Potential that takes us discovering the inner kingdom - and that universal Self present in all things.

Patanjali referes Pratyahara at the end of the second chapter of four (Sadhana Pāda) exposing the practical componente of the path to Yoga, in the verse 2:54 that I transcribed above. But there are several the verses still in the first and second chapters that, at least for me, only come to reinforce the importance of Pratyahara. The importance of Pratyahara as an anga (step) with merit to mention in isolation.

Even Pratyahara being mentioned at the end of the second chapter as the fifth step of the eight steps of Patanjali to Yoga, I see that the student is subtly introduced to its idea already in the first chapter. Pratyahara is presented, in my view as the great portal of Bahiranga - the elements in reference to the external journey - to Antaranga - the elements in reference to the inner journey. And in that way every time the need to dive inward is referred, to explain the process or the objective of the previous steps, the notion of Pratyahara is subtly introduced in our mind well before of its mention and of being revealed it’s role in the process. Here the following verses are analises in relationship to Pratyahara:

tataḥ pratyakcetanādhigamo‘pyantarāya abhavaś ca 1:29 YS

‘When the inversion of consciousness is practiced, turning it inward, the obstacles are overcome’, translates the sutra (verse) above quoted. Although in the description of Pratyahara, are the senses of the mind the refrain themselves from the sensorial objects, the practice described above is not far from encapsulating Pratyahara in a total and holistic perspective. In truth through where our sensation travels, so goes the consciousness of the experience and carrying all the experience to the mind. Such is the way to avoid the worsening of the obstacles that allow to lose ourselves in the way, and maybe the beginning of the Yoga journey. And so is the definition of Pratyahara, ready to dive in the real Yoga journey, more deep and internal.

tat-pratiṣedha-artham-eka-tattva-abhyāsaḥ 1:32

The above recited sutra referes that for the removal of the obstacles and the accompanying symptoms (mentioned in the previous verses), one shall practice the concentration on one principle. The focus on one only object, requires the abstraction of all other objects at which our senses are exposed to. It is about sharpening the mind not to distract oneself upon developing concentration. And so one has to realize that the direction of attention and intensification of concentration starts willingly within us - and it is that recovery of self-empowerment that Pratyahara suggests

Antaranga consists in Dharana, Dhyana and Samādhi - in other words Concentration, MAnd dictation and Liberation. Pratyahara is the launching ramp to a whole internal Universe. And to become conscious of the simple experience of being focused or in a meditative state, it’s necessary to be aware that what allows this is our capacity of letting go the chains that our senses have on our external objects. And free one can be really feel and observe ifself, and cultivate the focus that starts from within, turn it into meditation, and further on a deeper state of liberation: Samādhi, being the liberation the individual causes, and a broader perspective, a union with reality and an Universal cause.

I am defensor that in the way of yoga humility makes the way. The union with the cosmos is our objective, because there we will be already unassociated with the afflictions of the soul - sorrows and pleasures - and will attain a bigger livelihood potencial of happiness, purpose and abundance. BUtbecause the way doesn’t start at the end, the most suggested technique is meditation. For me the meditative state is something that happens in the internal universe of each one of us, being that the most accessible technique to try is the exercise of concentration. For such one might start very well before in Pratyahara, in dominion of the senses, taking hold of reins that extend themselves from our consciousness to the outside world.
Many are the techniques to assume this personal control, but any of them will develop Pratyahara and Pratyahara will develop that technique.

Sérgio Ramos
5.5.2024

‘Ashtanga, Embodiment and Complex Systems’, by Iain Grysak (book review)

http://ashtangayoganazare.weebly.com/blog/ashtanga-embodiment-and-complex-systems-by-iain-grysak-book-review

http://ashtangayoganazare.weebly.com/blog/ashtanga-embodiment-and-complex-systems-by-iain-grysak-book-review#comments

Uncategorized

ASHTANGA, EMBODIMENT AND COMPLEX SYSTEMS Reflections during my years of practice with Sharath Jois 2014 - 2024by Iain Grysak Book Summary: The collected essays in this book represent the evolution of my Ashtanga practice, teaching and worldview for the 10-year period that began with a new teacher, a new home, and a new philosophical and spiritual framework in 2014.Four of the essays were sp [...]

ASHTANGA, EMBODIMENT AND COMPLEX SYSTEMS Reflections during my years of practice with Sharath Jois 2014 - 2024
by Iain Grysak

Book Summary:

The collected essays in this book represent the evolution of my Ashtanga practice, teaching and worldview for the 10-year period that began with a new teacher, a new home, and a new philosophical and spiritual framework in 2014.
Four of the essays were specifically written about my first, second and fifth trips to practice in Mysore with R. Ao viver integralmente este valor, com amor e paz, manifestam-se ambientes livres de hostilidade e violência, tanto no seu interior como no seu exterior.

SATYA
SATYA é a verdade. Estar sempre a viver a verdade, é estar sempre a proferir a verdade.

EN
AHIMSĀ*SATYA*ASTEYA*BRAHMACHARYA*APARIGRAHĀ
अहहसिं ासत्यास्तेयब्रह्मचयाापरिग्रहायमााःI

Of the eight limbs of Ashtanga Yoga of Patanjali, the YAMAS are the first - the most accessible, essencial and where all the path of Yoga should sit. They are those friends whose loyalty most be mutual, raw in their words and of action always thinking our own well-being in truth. Keeping them near us will attract good things, protect you and keep you away from the worst. Besides being an absolute guaranteed mean to gain positive credit in deed and thought. The idea is that this relationship is grown gradually so that YAMAS will keep unconditionally with us, independently of time, space or context.

jāti-deśa-kāla-samaya-anavacchinnāḥ sārva-bhaumāḥ mahā-vratam

On the contrary of what you might think, the YAMAS are not only about keeping our conduct towards others in the best way possible at the path of Dharma (of what is right), but it is also about opening this magic power of righteousness in our direction, as we align with it.
The best friends, are like the more correct and healthy ingredients, and with time they will allow us attain our potential - our true nature, Swarupa.
The 5 YAMAS - AHIMSĀ, SATYA, ASTEYA, BRAHMACHARYA and APARIGRAHĀ - are here exposed, for reflection and integration:

AHIMSĀ
Becoming firmly established in AHIMSĀ is to live by the side of, and in the presence of, non-violence. By living integrally this value, with love and peace, environments free from hostility and violence are manifested, as much inside as outside. Just like all Yamas, it’s valourization in our intimate should happen first, its’ sense should appeal to us for its’ practice. Then around us, in personal and community relationship, with AHIMSĀ, we can create more and more spaces of love, colaboration and harmony. With AHIMSĀ in our intimate our mere sight can convert someone evil into kind; and in the presence of AHIMSĀ they can live and eat together: cow, goat and tiger.

SATYA
SATYA is truth. Being always living the truth, is speaking the truth always. Being firmly established and intimately connected to truth is living in SATYA. That is a mastery developed towards what we think and how we act. Living in SATYA is having developed a coherent disciplina in our speach that never runs from the truth. It is measuring the strength of our words and knowing the weight of the words to the point of never stretching out from truth. Being one with truth, is not existing any distinction between that which is true and that what I speak, of how I act and translate what I feel to the tiniest quantifiable measure. I and truth within diference, equals – this livelihood in terms of perfection. So, living the truth will be to the point that truth is everything I say and that everything I say is truth, and if not, it becomes true. That is the retribution of a faithful and friendly relationship with SATYA.

ASTEYA
Honesty can the closest translation we might have in the western world for ASTEYA. Definitely an attribute of purity of character. But here ASTEYA is seen as a yogic virtue of non- stealing, in such a way that it is about a transparency of character that comes from an aspirant that has worked its purity of ego and identity. That aspirant that became s inseparable from ASTEYA stays established in non-stealing, in not assuming as theirs what is not theirs and what doesn’t need. Even in the presence of the most valuable precious gem does not succumb in wanting to possess it, and yet it will attract to themselves and rightfully for themselves the most desirable riches. In the company of ASTEYA one become the most pure and brilliant jewel as it also does not fail in helping us to find the most precious jewels there is to find.

BRAHMACHARYA
Brahma means Supreme Being – that which we can externally adore but also that which we are and lives within us accessible when we are the purest of ourselves, the Supreme Self. Important is to say that the above mentioned Yamas are the aid to come in close to becoming that ‘Supreme Self’. Acharya means living with, or carry – in this case, to carry the presence of Supreme Self in to all our actions, not letting it go, and retaining its Universal energy within our bodies. And in this way transmit our max potency into all our actions. In the most austere yogic perspective, BRAHMACHARYA means sexual abstention. As it is through this way the physical form of letting go, of releasing from our bodies the biggest concentration of energy that we accumulate, in the form of sexual fluids. In that more carnal regard BRAHMACHARYA is the retention of that fluid, for a greater physical empowerment, mental discernment and emotional courage. The physical retention of sexual energy helps in feeling the huge universal strength that inhabits our bodies, and in not letting it go, direct it in ascension to strengthen and purify our hearts and brain. Energy is our true nature. To the level of our relationships BRAHMACHARYA is being transparent, control and manage the raw universal energy in our body, mind and spirit. In the current age we might say that it is similar to living in Mindfully. It is to be and act in continence to our Supreme Self, in respect to this in all small and big endeavors, knowing how to honor the generational energy inside of us. It is about not wasting what we receive, and giving with meaning. Living in BRAHMACHARYA is to live with vigour, energy and courage.

APARIGRAHĀ
Becoming firmly established in APARIGRAHĀ is a process. It must intiatially become a more assertive practice to identify and cut inadequate habits, and later set back up again according to our real life necessities. APARIGRAHĀ means to live a free life and not subject to excessive conditionings. More specifically, APARIGRAHĀ means pratice of detachment. It is the art of not accumulating useful or pleasurable objects. It is living free of our garage at max capacity, but also of the things that are at our attic of our heads. The detachment towards physical objects aswel as the detachment towards emotional projections and expectations are equally relevant, being that one triggers the other. What do we carry with us? That doesn’t make sense, that only weights and occupies us? APARIGRAHĀ helps to answer, with the helps from our friends from before SATYA e ASTEYA we won’t be fooled. We will be freed and light, unconditionally open, available to what awaits us in this life here and now. Without being stuck in the past, or in the hopes for the future, APARIGRAHĀ gifts us with the possibility of knowledge of beyond this life of ours.

In Memory of Guruji Sharath Jois: the sudden passage and what he meant for us [EN]

http://ashtangayoganazare.weebly.com/blog/in-memory-of-guruji-sharath-jois-the-sudden-passage-and-what-he-meant-for-us

http://ashtangayoganazare.weebly.com/blog/in-memory-of-guruji-sharath-jois-the-sudden-passage-and-what-he-meant-for-us#comments

Uncategorized

Srī Guruji Sharath R. It was sudden.

How hard it is for us all to be writing and/ or reading this. There is a deep involvement of all of us with Sharathji as the Paramaguru of the Ashtanga Yoga tradition. Was he not only the center column of all traditional Ashtanga Yoga lineage, but more than that he was taken in to peoples lives as a mentor, a faithful supporter, as a genuine loyal to truth and practicality, a nature lover, a friend, as a remover darkness, as torch bearer – Guru. He was before all this a loving father and husband, and he would glow instantly whenever his family would enter the room.

I’ve been studying directly with Sharathji since 2015, at the early stages of my involvement with yoga and Ashtanga practice. From that point onwards I felt a strong connection with Sharathji, to my surprise, it was and is deep. I described my first realization of him has my Guru in a blogpost named ‘Guruji: from skeptic to devotee’ you can find in my website, in late 2016. From that point onwards every year I found a way to connect with him in person. During my practice the voice of support within me is still his, throughout the years never softened and it never will.

Wether on a lengthy trip to Mysore, or on the WS I joined in twice in London and one time in Ubud, or wether online during Covid pandemic. His presence mattered, to bring me back to my humble center, to take me deeper or ‘hold my horses’.

What maked Sharathji special was his ability to be equanimous, gracefully shifting from messing humorously with you to being assertive and demanding with you that makes your spine immediately straight and eyes focused. He knew ‘sthira sukha āsanam’ not just applied to āsana practice but to life. Living life is a flow between conducting it and enjoying it. That is why interactions off the mat were really important for the journey of long months studying with him. The wait in the mysore room. ‘One more!’ , could mean you or not, but how you manage your emotional response to that calling was up to you.

This next February 2025 it was going to make 10 years since I first met Sharathji. So 10 years ago I already had my acceptance email from the shala to join KPJAYI, and I already had tickets for my first trip to India, and I was back to practice frequently after a wild summer break. I was 22 years old.
In almost 10 years, Sharathji was present in my life as the solid rock that holds my commitment to Ashtanga practice unfailingly. It did accompanied me through different stages of my life.

My first season of practice in Mysore with Sharathji it helped me turn from a rebel anti-capitalist kind of a hippie into the path of Dharma (righteousness). I ended up more focused on making myself better than in destroying - from my lifestyle or exposing myself to - greedy interest, not that I wouldn’t just that the focus wasn’t there anymore.

In that first season besides not knowing much more than half primary series, I was losing everything: I lost my wallet in Gokulam streets, with my national ID and Credit Card in it, which eventually came into Sharathjis’ hands and which he returned it to me during conference with a small dose of mocking; and I lost, twice I think, my Shala Card. After these incidents, in the waiting room for the Mysore class, almost everyday he would come over and ask “where’s your card?”, “Haven’t lost your card?”, and laugh and walk away. He would invent jokes for and about everyone waiting for class. A way lighten up tension of those waiting to come in to practice. But it was also to confirm that you were assigned to that batch, and more importantly, I believe, it would serve as a personality test. To learn you and how approach you. At that point I knew I had to adapt myself, had already strings tied to my Shala Card so it wouldn’t fall off, and rearranged how to carry my wallet. I was just too comfortable in the shala routine and had to get my shit together, listen to the call to get ready and assume responsibility for my life. Years later I still question if I have my s#%t together… I hope not to disappoint you Sharathji.

Fast forward years later I return already 30, married with Vanessa, also a committed Ashtangi, and our new-born baby Aria just 4 months old to stay for 3 months. We were blessed to connect with the lineage has a family. Myself to be there grown up (not that I felt it next to him) as a father and as a committed practitioner meant a lot for me. It meant a lot for both of us, Vanessa and me. In fact, our first big date in the same month, was a huge step in our relationship, we met up in London to go for Sharathji WS July 2019. That little trip was a bond in between us and Sharath was there binding us. I decided almost last minute to join Vanessa in London for the WS and I will never regret it. Later we travel to Mysore with our kids. The enormous respect Sharathji has for parents in the sadhana is amazing. He knows that there are things bigger than us, bigger than our little sadhana journey and being a father or mother is one of them, he knew it is the most natural expression of love. He would daily make an extra effort to accommodate our new-born with a rug for us to lie her down as we waited to go practice. The gesture was just full hearted.

Sharathji gave a lot of him to all of us. He would want us to feel safe so we would not rush and fully open up to our potential. ‘Why you rushing? your baby is safe outside! …’ he said and giggled, during a Led Intermediate, as I was rushing the vinyasa into Mayurāsana.

This February 2025 we were returning to Mysore (maybe we still are), with our two children. Taking our new-born Ravi, to live a similar trip as Aria traveling in his first few months to Mysore, India. Meet Sharathji and feel the Ashtanga community at the source.

It’s hard to recognize that Sharathji his no longer here for us to show up there, thank him and show him - look the person I became, look the yogi you help me became, validate me and give me your dear blessings! This sort of ego validation was an underlying motive to go back to see him. But Sharathji would hardly engage in any validation of that sort. Sharathji was very wise on how to not boost our egos and not to be the cause of inflated egos. He would probably be more prone to gracefully disinflate our ego, as that is more in line with a yogis path. And we all knew that, at least those who understood it so. Sometimes this was brutal for some people. We knew that whatever great achievement we had from a previous season with him to the next one, was not going to be received with all ‘hurrays and fireworks’, but maybe with ‘mere’ pure content, and this is also why we would return, perhaps subconsciously, as a form of one-to-one emotional recalibration. This was an incredible skill of his, a natural occurrence perhaps, a raw interchange, plainly putting us owning us. Giving us what was already ours, making us realize what what we carry with us, to ultimately realize to we are.

Sharathji would want us to own our validation. To not need a constant external approval. Maybe Gurujis last lesson to us is that of spiritual sovereignty. Guruji has left his body, trusted us and left us the hard task of self-accountability and self-approval within the Ashtanga Yoga journey. Needless to say Guruji has left many capable guides to assist us on that journey along the Way.

Guruji has also left us with divine grace, pain free in the midst of dormant trees in the woods, as if diffusing himself within the deep core of earth’s natural kingdom. So that in from now on one to seek him has to connect with the divinity of nature. Can’t imagine how it would be to feel those trees in those woods when they restart blooming, after their long exhale, in the coming spring. And nature during his life was his big love, the natural world and its mystic power. Wishing us all to truly and deeply connect with nature. Connecting raw with nature can be through our bodies, through other beings or in raw natural environments (micro to macro). Perhaps the biggest test of Sharathji to us individually and as a community is from here onwards.

Besides all the impact as guru and teacher I mentioned above, and much before that even, Sharathji was a loving father and husband. My thoughts and prayers go to Sharathjis family in lovefull support first, and that all who have Sharathji in their hearts center may we all find sense and comfort somehow.

Love you Sharathji (1971 - 2024)

Sérgio Ramos
17.11.2024

Guruji - from skeptic to devoted [EN]

http://ashtangayoganazare.weebly.com/blog/guruji-from-skeptic-to-devoted-en

http://ashtangayoganazare.weebly.com/blog/guruji-from-skeptic-to-devoted-en#comments

Uncategorized

Ever since I started to understand a bit about the complexity of the mind and into thoughts about what keeps us from following life’s simple purpose of enjoying and thriving. Into thoughts about perception and how we fill the space between us and the object we interact with, and that because of this we lose the truth of these. I started to, as you can see from these last lines of text, to feel as if lost and overwhelmed with knowledge and excitement. With this, one loses his centre, his root cause and initial motive of when it started this journey into the unknown of the within. One starts to lose a practical sense and gets trapped within other layers of minds complex. It’s true the very common saying of “there is always more to learn”. One gets more knowledge but it doesn’t get anymore wiser. Wiser in the practical sense. In life.

Ever since penetrating into the dense jungle of the mind, I felt like I should be cautious to not get trapped within this jungle. I felt I should find a guide to the within, a lighthouse in the fog, more than a teacher, a “darkness removal”, a guru. Someone who knows, like a guide, the ways in and out, that knows where the challenges are and lets you go through, someone I’ll trust when says “Go!”. After all the journey towards within is a personal journey. Books are good but they won’t see you move on. In this sense I needed something/someone that would help me hold the root cause of why I started the journey within, that is to enjoy life and thrive. Not career success or fame, only the pure contentment in self-realization, whether it takes me through any other successes or not, but always showing me my conditions and revealing my potential. I always thought that whoever (& whatever) would be to me this strong light in the fog would have to be a nature connected and inspired, centered, rooted, a good family person and a love full being. This something and someone, I felt from beginning, would make sense to be with this traces. It turns out that I found first the “something”, although of course indirectly through the someone, the Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga practice. That it is also nature connected, by allowing us to understand the natural flow of the body dynamics and the breath cycles; also rooted and centered, by different levels of concentration (dharana) through the practice of drishtis and sequencing of postures (asana), keeping mind busy and attentive. I heard once Ashtanga Yoga is the guru.

But I am writing this in honor of the “someone”. The phenomenal love full beings that have kept alive throughout generations “something” (Ashtanga Yoga) for the most necessary purpose of showing the conditions and revealing the potential. When I started to practice Ashtanga Yoga my teacher made me aware of parampara (the passing down of knowledge from one to another, lineage) and let me know the origins. Krishnamacharya was guru to K. Pathabi Jois; Pathabi Jois was guru to Sharath Jois and today Sharath Jois is the guru to the generations of today, including me. Yes today, after finishing another season with Sharathji in Mysore, am honored and feel lucky to say that I found my guru and it is in his honor that I write this. Sharathji is the contemporary guru I look up to. Centered and nature loving, all gazing, self-aware and disciplined being. And dare to say more I do not. From the first conferences I ever watched, Sharath used nature analogies to illustrate the eight limbed path of Patanjali (Ashtanga Yoga). The first months tested me and brought me ( and all many other students) to my unaware potential. I became more productive, self-aware and more able to make myself happy. Ever watchful Sharathji teaches without lecturing much and with allot of will power. Observing how yoga is arising within us Sharathji guides us through the methodic and systematic asana practice, seeking for yoga outer manifestations in body of organism detoxification and nervous cleanse. Sharathji has experienced allot regarding the teaching of Yoga, having assisted and practiced by the side of his guru continuously for 25 years. His experience has led him to know the many different types of bodies and mentalities that this world can carry, and also having witnessed countless of these diverse beings going through the transformational yoga experience. When I came to him this was evident. He might not know your name but he knows how much you can go and how much you are not letting yourself go. Will power is everything. And one can change their environment and surrounding to fit their own best interests, I’ve learned. And will power is tapas, the austerity and effort. And this is for sure in Ashtanga. As long as you practice will power determinedly, accordingly to your possibilities, everything will come. So it says “Practice, practice, practice and all is coming”.

“If you feel the air is too polluted, plant trees”. There are at least two things I feel are so honorable of Sharathji. First is the calling for nature he is forwarding to us . “Go to nature”. The times we spend today in social media and with technology has taken us further distant to our natural habitat. Nature is as good as a doctor or a teacher, and Sharathji makes an effort in not letting us underestimate its power and influence. Modern cultures have grown distant and fearful towards nature for no apparent reason, only habit. The second thing is the love for family and parenthood. Throughout the centuries Yoga was a practice that led followers undergo into deep austerities and exile from society and family life, to reach their highest potential. The love for family and parenthood has so much to do with yoga, as for the practice of benevolence and sharing. Yoga practices were 100 years ago scholar studied or practiced by exile man. Today’s Ashtanga Yoga practice, from decades of research, has formulated a practice thoughtful and still austere for a family person, man or woman, to fulfill their potential. Here the love for family is a side-to-side practice with yoga practice at its best to unleash us from our biggest tremors and open a way for future generations of peace.

A guru is like a bridge, like a light way path, a mediator into the heart. The way might be hard but at least we have a light. One other thing I consider important is the teaching of contentment. The most important teaching on Yoga. “Even when in backbend you should be, ah! So good, and not stop breathing or have a panic attack”, said Sharath.

My guru has the 3 most important spirits: spirit of the vast, spirit of contentment and spirit of parenthood (benevolence), something I seek from the beginning, and it helps to grow stable within me these three spirits.

I write to honor my feeling of gratitude towards my guru Sharathji. The way I see him matters more to me than the way he sees me; if I see him as a guru then I am a seeker. I thank Sharathji and intend to make the knowledge received applied into my life. I remember the source of knowledge.

OM sri gurubhyo namah hari OM
OM saha na vavatu saha nau bhunaktu
saha viryam sahavavahai
tejas vinavadhita mastu
ma vidvishavahai
OM SHANTI SHANTI SHANTIH

1.12.2016
Sérgio Ramos

Ashtanga Mantra de Abertura… Reflexões sobre… [PT]

http://ashtangayoganazare.weebly.com/blog/ashtanga-mantra-de-abertura-reflexoes-sobre-pt

http://ashtangayoganazare.weebly.com/blog/ashtanga-mantra-de-abertura-reflexoes-sobre-pt#comments

Uncategorized

Nihśreyase = além do bom; jāngali = da floresta; kāyamane = doutor/físico;

Samsāra = ciclos/hábitos ; hālāhala = venenos; moha = ilusão ; śāntyai = pacíficando;

A paz é a liberação.

Ābāhu = até aos ombros; puruśākāram = forma de Homem;

E assim o é o nosso Guru.

Sahasra = mil; śirasam = cabeças; śvetam = pureza;

Sergio Ramos
20/7/2022

5 Variações de vinyasa ‘salto à Frente/a Trás’ [PT]

http://ashtangayoganazare.weebly.com/blog/5-variacoes-de-vinyasa-salto-a-frentea-tras-pt

http://ashtangayoganazare.weebly.com/blog/5-variacoes-de-vinyasa-salto-a-frentea-tras-pt#comments

Uncategorized

1. the walk
2. the hop
3. the JUMP
4. the fly
5. the hover
(5) 6. bonus

A versão 5 ‘the hover’ é pura diversão e desafio.

25/05/2021

Sérgio Ramos - Professor Autorizado por Sharath Jois [EN & PT]

http://ashtangayoganazare.weebly.com/blog/sergio-ramos-professor-autorizado-por-sharath-jois-en-pt

http://ashtangayoganazare.weebly.com/blog/sergio-ramos-professor-autorizado-por-sharath-jois-en-pt#comments

India

journey

meaning

mysore

teaching

yoga

“It’s not about certificate, it’s about sadhana.” , Sharath Jois in conference ‘22Being now blessed by Guruji Sharath Jois as an AUTHORIZED TEACHER I feel that this is more than most an appreciation of my Sadhana, my journey of the Self through the Ashtanga Yoga practiceFirst time I met Sharathji was in early 2015. I was 22 yo and Ashtanga Yoga had showed up in my path to help me find my center and stability, in both mental and physical dimensions. And practice with Sharathji had challenged further the stability I was growing only find a deeper sense of stability while embracing extended aspects of the universal opposites. This was my first time in India, and my first big trip alone out of Europe, consciously on a spiritual quest. Was learning in Mysore. About me, about the Indian culture, about Yoga philosophy, and about practice… and I was losing things all over the place at some point.

I was losing my shala ID cards, forgetting my sandals… distracted in such away that one time I lost my wallet in Gukulam (shala neighborhood) with bank card, ID card and cash. And I was so frustrated that I had to go look for it, and probably admit I lost it and do all documents all over again. I had went to the police and all.
I surrendered to this idea. I went to the Saturday conference in the shala with Sharathji. Knowing I would have to spend the rest of the day figuring this burocracy out. During the conference with hundreds of my fellow students, to my surprise, Sharath tries to call out my name “who is Carlos Santos?”, nobody answered, then he points at me “You! What is your name? Did you loose something???” - I was just nodding - “… here is your wallet”. I just humbled stood up in front of everyone and want to pick it up. Distracted, embarrassed and blessed. From then on Sharathji would always ask me if I had everything and if I didn’t had lost anything, teasing and smiling.

Back here to Mysore this season, traveling with our child and with my wife for the first time. I feel the responsibility and awareness Ashtanga Yoga as contributed to my life. When now I feel all is flowing together and positively in my life.

Grateful for Guruji Sharathji for the amazing journey he has been walking and sadhana he kept for so many decades, and how he passes on to us this teaching in kindness and in discipline equally.

** as an Authorized Teacher of Ashtanga Yoga, I have, as practitioner and teacher, placed Porto and AYP on the map as official shala to pass down this method to those who are studying.
*** students who practice consistently with me (Sergio) for at least two months are eligible to apply to study with Sharath Jois in Mysore, India at SYC, and live this major experience with Yoga like I did.
PT

That is the norm. These stones or trees are sacred because of their age, they were a place of gathering of the community. A shelter. A resting place for the soul. A place to hear our hearts, to speak our true nature. To remember our true nature, of connectedness with the environment and the nature of the Earth. To hear the whispers of wisdom that only an old tree can reveal. Revelations beyond words, or better yet, prior to words. Thus a place where human deed and thinking would surrender.
Then the worship gained a construction force, temples grew and grew, higher, larger, more decorative and darker, in an attempt perhaps of a more evident meaning of the source and object of worship. Even without using words, temples filled their structures with many symbols and narratives. In an expression of careful sensible respect and thoughtful intentions towards the worshiped. In the temple and prayer rooms one can admire the intricate and meticulous components that give form to a whole meaning of soulful worship. In a larger scale, monumental temples make use of fanatics to adore the gods. All to enhance the attached relationship between god and men, to portrait the connection of man and its divine nature. An exterior compass of a journey within, that can be easily mislead the journeyer of the Self in a direction of other destination that not the Self. And yet human mind still poured into the plain and simple worship site. Maybe to harbor more devotees and rise temple energy, but at the same time channeling any individual devotion through communal devotional reflections. The individual aspect of spirituality is hard to keep in such circumstances. And perhaps serves us in a certain stage of our spiritual journey, but on other stage it might not. Individuality is key to any spiritual seeker. Only because it is one self that has to on its own take him/ herself to discover and be its own true nature.
And Nature is and will always will be the means, as long as we have a body on Earth. Vibrant healthy nature sites will always be a bigger reflection of our true nature, of our souls frequency. The interdependency is so big, that any respect to Nature is respect our Self, any rest in Nature is a rest in our Self, any knowledge of Nature is knowledge on the Self…

It saddens me how it is evident the reversal of the mental devotional act and the natural source of our devotion. I rather enjoy a tiny stone sculpture - even though tiny filled with meaning and of our understanding - in the middle of its raw environment, wether a natural desert or an abundant forest. And that little stone would guide me to connect with my surrounding and inner nature. Rather experience this than huge temples amassing thousands with only one alone natural object of worship, if so - in a vain attempt to reflect the whole natural cosmic rule and perseverance within and without - as in this foto/video. I see the tree alone and minimized. Perhaps a single tree is easier to worship, than if that tree would be in the midst of thousands of plants. To worship trees in the forest all together as one entire being, human mind has to expand and stop. And that is not intended. When worshiping human mind has to know very clearly what is its heart opening to, and when the object of worship is an unquantified, unconditional, universal subject as God, a cosmic ruler, it became very hard for the mind to reduce that to a single point and able to go beyond such reductions. Then only the heart can connect to that.

One thing I have most recently learned to admire in Indias’ cultural and religious practice is the existence of a prayer room, or Puja room in every home. Houses are designed with a small room for prayer and worship. It is indeed a temple at home. This is something that surely creates a more intimate connection with the worshipped objects. As every different families has a different and specific deity. This personal puja room very much so gives space for the realization of our own deities, our own beliefs and form of worship. This home temple habit is much more significant than a temple of masses. It may not carry the energy, strong and vibrant of the prayers of many people throughout many years. But it is mostly about your own energy and your present worship state, as it should be in a public temple. Home puja rooms witness a more vulnerable, raw and naked individual in worship. At home things are for you only, you are not doing things going with the current of your neighbor devotees nor to be witnessed as a great devotee. Home prayers in a puja room if done genuinely and heartfelt generate a flame maybe not so bright and strong but true to you. As in opposition with public worship spaces that carry so many different energetic signatures.
The selfish act of human pursuit of spirituality seems at times a race to get the gods attention, even if just for a split second of attention, a devotee would be happy to steal gods attention, away from their ruling duties, rather than trying to be closer to god by bettering themselves and ultimately understanding our divine true nature. At times the seeker seeks only a divine consolation for its scars and struggles, or praises for its accomplishments - the blessings. A site filled with powerful energy channels it to you. Such as the pinochle of a temple building harnesses the energy down to the worship womb and then to the devotee. So would an old tall tree, a high rock or a mountain. It saddened me that the worship in this site I expose in the video is then taken to the river nearby. And on top of platinum paper plate, a candle and gift (coconut, flower, rice, turmeric, etc…) is sent afloat down the river, taking their offers and praises to the gods. To the gods of the sky, of the water, of the earth, of the sun, the rulers of that sacred natural site and it all. And maybe centuries ago there wouldn’t be any polluting plates and plastic bags, as simple banana leaves or other would do to improvise a float. Now these offers don’t travel much down the river and sink. The pollution there is absurd. It’s hard to believe that it is above the law this mass pollution. Even though it is said they clean every sunday. The act in itself is harmful. Harmful to the local and global nature as it is to the human mind. During the act planting seeds of toxicity towards oneself, the others and natures infinite affected species. When natures only gives. Our attempt to give back to Nature, is at this level of worship a failure.

Even with our most beautiful poems and devotional art to reveal us closer to our true nature. Even as when the best of poems and arts are the best when they leave our mind in awe and contemplation. When will we understand that words and acts will never be enough!?
Indeed there is an apparent contradiction in self-knowledge traditions - such as religious and cultural lineages like the Vedas, Hinduism and Yoga - that, in todays context, practices turn up to be harming and disarranged with its original goal. Specially due to the globalization of the past decades. I would say, devotees have been absorbing customs through comercial brainwash, that have deviated faithful intentions of being one with Nature.

I just hope that ever more we all can relate and connect to the inner temple of our body - meaning planet Earth and our physical body - , of our mind - our thoughts and emotions - and spirit - our energy and life purpose. That through these we connect with all others and the whole Cosmos, only to remember the subtlety of our true Self… that we make use of our devotional state to bring us back to our center, instead of getting lost prayers. That maybe this is all we need to bring ourselves into the right path.

Sérgio Ramos
2/7/2024

desculpem - O Desabafo [PT]

http://ashtangayoganazare.weebly.com/blog/desculpem-o-desabafo-pt

http://ashtangayoganazare.weebly.com/blog/desculpem-o-desabafo-pt#comments

dor

journey

A fungar do nariz, é logo comprimido.

A informação é chave.

A nossa percepção fica distorcida, e igualmente a nossa comunicação distorcida.

12/20/2023

Entrevista com aluno Alcino [PT]

http://ashtangayoganazare.weebly.com/blog/entrevista-com-aluno-alcino-pt

http://ashtangayoganazare.weebly.com/blog/entrevista-com-aluno-alcino-pt#comments

Uncategorized

Everything looks blurred and not quite clear even though you are actually exposed to more light. It takes a bit of time but your eyes adjust to the right amount of light intake so that you can more easily sense the space of your environment clearly. The same occurs when rapidly you go from a very luminous space into a darker space, your eyes have to adjust.

Clarity is not about dark or light. Clarity is about having the right amount of sensibility to perceive clearly our environments.
Often people grow up into a depth of being that is way more sensitive and sensible than all others in their environment. Not understanding this themselves and not being understood by others as such, these people tend to be pushed around to fit in, tend to be silenced not because their voice is not important but because it not received and is misinterpreted… These people, more sensible, more in tune with subtler senses of reality often fall out on their true natural perception of reality and feel the need to exclude their special vision of the world to fit in the more conventional standards of society. In this case the more sensible one is the more likely it is to be seen as weak and ignored. Instead of society providing them tools and support to connect, to link, their innate special sensitivity with the more mundane world. One is more easily outcasted, and eventually ends up injured, not only destroyed to use their innate sensible skills, but also completely demoralized to connect with the mundane world. Once perceived and reproved as an outcast by society, bridges to the common world are burned on purpose by society, completely diminishing the contributions, that the sensibility of those who are more sensible can give, down to nothing.

In a way, it is not only the common world that is relentlessly pushing away the ‘new’ and subtler visions of how the world state is and is developing, and at the same time not choosing to rise up. But it also up to the more sensible/ sensitive people, the ones who see (feel) clearly what doesn’t make sense and what are the new roads ahead to a better future. It’s in the hands of these the opportunity to make space for their voice, to lead by example, to make a strong stance and neither close their vision upon them and be left alone with it, nor joining into a corrupt society, witnessing its ways, unspoken with their vision for change chattered for commodity.

Yoga guru, Sharathji Jois, often reminds us students to keep cultivating the purification of the senses, detoxification of the body, cleansing the nervous system and sharpening the mind. As from these emerges clarity and lightness of being. And even though this is attained, over the long run, the student is encouraged to merge into society: start a family (or a small community) and keep spreading the wisdom or by teaching or only mere presence. Instead of closing in this wisdom in a retreated way, isolating ourselves in the mountains far away from the civilized common world, not allowing true wisdom, pure insight and clear thinking merge with the rest of society. The invitation is the opposite: to hold down to your centre strong, to your hearts truth, and merge with society not ever mistaking your true nature.

The voice of true vision inside anyone, even with all struggles, should be heard.

“I have too much clarity!”. Often we hear this, even if true, serving as way to escape to an higher calling. A calling for you to society, mistaken as a selfish calling of you the a higher dimension or purpose. Anyone with higher sensitivity can learn the ways of communication and appreciation of those less sensible, and find ways to create empathy and therefore pervading a deeper message that in the future will contribute for the better. Doesn’t mean, one should always step down from our energy but always be willing to extend an hand in help and guidance to those in need, even if unknowingly. It means true compassion, but it doesn’t mean also to keep continuously knocking on doors that will never open, or scream to deaf ones (and just fueling your own enragement, bringing you off center).

A more sensible person can own it, strengthen their channel to pervade higher meaning and share with more and more compassionately. “Too much clarity!” Is a trick of the mind and of an ego. It’s a defensive scheme that doesn’t allow growth in the long run. Managing encounters and relationships so it isn’t too draining is important, but don’t allow you to use your sensitivity to exclude yourself, cut off from the whole world and loose sight of what your mission can be in the world.

I know ways in which one can be broken to disbelieve their own insights, their own instincts and projections of the ways life works and thrives in ever pure consciousness of balanced harmony in all levels of existence. Many have had traumas of abuse or neglect in young age that have left deep scars, if at least in our emotional and mental bodies, to allow one to see clearly their environment through their own special capacity and speak out their truth. Few have had healthy parenting that values the new and unconditioned voice of you as a child. But no one is alone, specially if you reach out to others and find your sacred space among all.

Wherever you are your clarity will adapt to your environment without losing form of your pure and wholesome unique vision of life, just as our biological senses do. And you will be able to be the bridge between worlds, or see the bridges you can take, more clearly from darkness to light. Just keep with strong conviction stepping outside, connected within.

PT

20.03.2021
Sérgio Ramos

Entrevista com aluna Soraya Meyer [PT]

http://ashtangayoganazare.weebly.com/blog/entrevista-com-aluna-soraya-meyer-pt

http://ashtangayoganazare.weebly.com/blog/entrevista-com-aluna-soraya-meyer-pt#comments

entrevista

Interview

Juro! Sinto-me a florescer a cada dia, a cada prática. Sinto-me mais leve e muito muito feliz!!! E isto é dito do fundo do meu coração.

Repirar... It is the source of all. And is where all is heading towards. And in between there are only different manifestations of it. Some in different sizes, shapes, colors, functions. Some sentient, some non sentient. Some perceptible to some senses. Some perceptible to other.
In the vast expressions of Maha Iswara we, humans come across. And our thoughts, our creativity, our creations is also a product of Maha Iswara. Or maybe a subproduct, a product non the less. We are part of this vast infinite fabric of life that is Maha Iswara. A tiny bit of it we might be. Like the dot we are in the vast immense known universe, and beyond. In the midst of this vastness of forms and expressive manifestations, there is the subtle and the gross of manifestations. Vibration is of the subtlest of Maha Iswara. From each vibration a different tone, a different creation, a different manifestation. The complex mix and combination of different kinds of vibrations raise density of manifestation from the said subtle to gross. At least at our perception.
Maha Iswara is like the primordial basic vibration that leads to every manifestation. Maha Iswara is the source and the end. The unperceptible vibrations at the source and end are the same. In between comes all forms.
Most of us have brutalized our use of the senses. Our sensitivity has been compromised to a level that we no longer can connect to the source at its source. We can in fact, with hard work of purification and regaining the control of the senses. Our senses are used to be communicating with grossest levels of manifestations. Being another being or a plant or a rock, we are not feeling or sensing it to the deepest level. Our sensation is smothered with vicious habits and the finer forms of communication with universe, which are the most direct ones, are being interfered with endless counter posed vibrations. We are not able to listen Maha Iswara as close to its source as we could. Maha Iswara is indeed us. Made of the same. And the fact is that Maha Iswara is always communicating with us where we coming from and where we are heading to. It’s harder for us to notice all subtle forms of this communication. We are in fact addicted to encode the purity of the “messages”. Even in the written words we read that is happening.
But if we really want to notice the spiritual messages coming from within or without that are arriving at any given moment. The messenger can be anyone unknown to us on a bus, any commercial poster, a song that just played on radio, the blowing wind, the sea breeze scent, a cleaning lady’s smile, a street artisan, a child you don’t know or even your own son, etc… everything is conveying the message for us. The language of Maha Iswara is everything. If we truly vow and hear Maha Iswara we will see that it’s hidden insights and messages are expressed in so many funny ways. The unexpected events, hilarious or horrific, are often conveying the most important messages.
It’s incredible and we can just be watching ourselves as we feel something. As we get triggered or enthusiastic about something. And we can look deeper within and try to identify the one within who is perceiving me relating to all this. There, we have found a deeper and closer to Maha Iswara sense of self. Untied to the self in all its cross work of relationships. And taking the ride back to the infinite through any mundane it isn’t so hard. We just got to listen and not get too involved and wrapped up without noticing it. Cause if we are always paying enough attention to ourselves within the mundane circumstances to what is going on, to the messages around us we can be involved without getting caught up in misunderstanding of what we truly are.
There is the fact that the messages are so many and overwhelming because they are most of them created artificially, inorganically are man made. Made by man and overflows ones mind with information that comes and floods everyone’s mind. It occupies space to flood our brains so much and we didn’t even invite that information in. It’s invading. And it’s meant to be this way. Human brains are disconnected to calmer and soother vibrations of the source of life because they are filled with an amazing amount of information, toxic information unable to be digested. This information built itself by busy minds, boosting other busy minds in a competitive stream to clog the minds of any commoner embarked on living this life. Information that is unneeded is built on and out of any common values we have and that we need for our sustenance. But these are pushed and created into absurd and in place of ignorance much artificially takes root. We carry around that we should be this or that. Or that we should have or act this way, or have or act that way. We are carrying around most of the time concerns that are not our own, that we have never actually needed to take upon ourselves. But we do. Because being busy is what is right.
And then we could only be home in our own safety and in our silence access the deepest of the universes vibrations. Sync with them in their ever pure nature. And we can’t because our mind is still processing tons of information that slipped through out the day into our subconscious without us being aware of it. Neglected overflow of information. Also called fatigue. The thing is that it stays with us. We don’t know and it takes the better of us. As intended.
Simple things are the best. Life is not complicated. We should be able to listen to ourselves easily. We should be less confused about our purpose and existence all the time. Maha Iswara is everywhere sending us signs. And if we open our eyes and purify our senses, we will able to discern what is the true message from the source and what is built in or mascaraed on top of it. How? Because we will feel it. Our all body will speak to us. Every little cell and particle that has travelled through the all of the universe to be part of this sentient agglomerate recognizes the call and will react and respond to the call. The call to speak for Maha Iswara. With and to Maha Iswara. On behalf of Maha Iswara. Because that particle is more the whole universe than a tiny bit of a self egotistical conscious being. Being that draws in self limitation. The particle vibrates in answering the call. We can listen better. Sharpen our sensitivity. Be more accountable for the message we transfer to others and not build our own self interests on top of them constantly and with greed. We are all carrying messages to each other. Messages of angels. We are angels tools if we let be. We are Maha Iswara ever pure consciousness tools and we shall honor that. Make every angel be seen, acknowledged and thanked. Because our life is made of an infinite amount of separate extraordinary things that are fit and belong together. And they came to be this way. It is life’s own order. Life in accordance with itself. We are an important part of it and we are to give the space for it.

26.05.2020

Interview with Student Christopher Leehman [PT & EN]

http://ashtangayoganazare.weebly.com/blog/interview-with-student-christopher-leehman-pt-en

http://ashtangayoganazare.weebly.com/blog/interview-with-student-christopher-leehman-pt-en#comments

Interview

purpose

Having met 6 months ago on the other side of the world, what was the impression you got from us and on the idea of this project AYP?

With your idea I was fully persuaded. I felt when you said it was the right point of time. I think you have been traveling a lot before and I saw that the time was right and to build up something new. My first impression: I was overwhelmed, I think you guys did a fantastic job, and I felt that the time was there to start.

We were on the other side of the world when we shared the AYP idea with you, did it sound possible?

If you desire it, I thought, it will happen and should take place. After you told me, I had my coffee after the practice, and the first thing I did was checking the flights to Porto: How often they take place and how much they cost. So I could figure out if I could go there more often. I think Southern Europe would be a perfect place to do it. I have never been to Porto, but heard many positive things, and that surrounding to settle would be great.

Now that you are here and 1month 1/2 open, with our project manifested. Practicing with us for 2 week and leaving in a few days. How are you feeling with the project, the teachings and the shala?

I very much appreciate your approach of teaching. It is different, it is more sophisticated. This also manifested in your contemporary logo: Its fresh-ish new -ish exciting. After my visit I am even more persuaded, that you move on your way-along the decision made by heart.
Within this short period you guys build-up something completely new in porto: a ashtanga community, a hospitable shala and a reliable schedule in a nice comfortable setting located in a dynamic area of Porto. I was surprised how many students have committed already, despite Corona. Your positive attitude and own dedication to yoga carries everybody along.

From the time we ever first met to these last few weeks, how did you feel we contributed to your path in yoga?

Already in the past when we met on Koh Phangan you both contributed to my development also on the philosophical perspective.
This time you let me take a different perspective on different asanas and helped me find and feel the postures more deeply. Further you helped me to slip into more difficult postures and find rest.
So I am curious on what I will find the next time I visit!

Thank You Chris for sharing and practicing, and for making the world a better place.

09.08.2020

Resistance (and Flow) [EN]

http://ashtangayoganazare.weebly.com/blog/resistance-and-flow-en

http://ashtangayoganazare.weebly.com/blog/resistance-and-flow-en#comments

bandhas

Ioga

yoga

Isn’t resistance a constant in life? Somehow. Resistance is felt as if it is, in a way, as important as the flow, the freedom from resistance. Resistance exists in accordance to a contrast with the sense of flow. And flow it only exists, at some extent, in the contrast to the sense of resistance. To flow in safety through curves, ups and downs, in these entangled ways of life, these interesting ones, Resistance plays an important part. That is, a break, a slow down, a coming together, before ascending up a stage or diving deep down. That sense of stop, resist, let’s center and go is in essence important to flow. In this way it is a managing tool of our energy. Although there is in the raw meaning of the word resistance a sense of stoping, obstruct and getting stuck in a fight, Resistance and Flowing come together and form harmony in life has we know it on earth. Let’s just think about earths valleys, rivers swaying down the mountains, clouds and rain, lakes, waterfalls, seas and oceans, etc… With excess of flowing we might just end up flowing in circles and not be able to recollect, center, gather and move up fully. But I’m in this article here to explore the concept of resistance. In the excess of resistance it is gathered an incredible amount of hidden secrets of our life that hold us back, cuts us off and diminishes our potential. And at the same time the understanding of it and the breakthrough off resistance might set us off in an incredible flow of our essence, and of our creative potential.
Swinging
If we think of a swing in which the design is meant to be made for us to feel and enjoy the awesome flow of our weight under the force of gravity. None of this awesome feeling of flowing freely in life, let lose and let go would exist, if it wasn’t, in this case for a swing. For the structure of a seat, a couple of ropes extending for either side upwards towards a strong tree branch. Without this structure that offers a resistance to our fall to the ground, we would just easily fall through to the floor, and there would hardly be any perceivable flow. We can also think of if in that swing there would be other couple of ropes tied to the sides of the seat coming down towards the floor and tightly tied to the ground. It’s a tight structure. A flowless swing. A swing not meant to swing. We can think in this way about tons of different things, like parachutes, surfboards, bicycles, many engineering structures, or natural world structure. That for their success to flow they have to provide a enough firm structure, that offers a resistance to hold its effect, to hold the users/passengers, and just the enough resistance to wind, or water, etc.., to be able to soothe through the changes of the environments. Tall bamboos, and tall tree branches that hold a load of leaves. That to hold such a structure that offers a resistance to the passing wind, have to have and enjoy such a light weight and flexible structure at the root of their branches and trunks. We could say that’s just like yoga asanas. At some point, it is said they should be happy, comfortable, relaxed, flexible (flow) and stable, firm, strong (resistance). The perceptible grace of the performance of yoga asana lie in this magical balance between strength and flexibility. A practice that directs itself to manifest and balance this two components is a practice of yoga.

Passive and Active
I see the letting the flow of things happen, with or through us, as an action of a passive nature. While I see that the actions that hold us together, firm, and standing resisting to gravity, or owning our own truths amidst other who don’t see it, being an action of an active nature. -The Yin Yang philosophies can be applied now and it fits perfectly-. But this fact being, that they are both extremely important actions and measures within our actions to have us fully embracing life, doesn’t mean that only the active actions, those that need strength and firmness, demand our full awareness, while the passive flow of things that life is so abundant of doesn’t. The passive actions of letting things flow and most importantly the awareness of it, the surrender of active consciousness to it, is of the most precious jewels in life. And it definitely offers more understanding of when and how to apply the active actions. After observing carefully the natural flow of things, within or without, (i.e. own thoughts, people, opportunities we attract, the chances we get, the way the sun runs in the sky, the way shadows move in the ground, the ways birds nest, or how much do the tides move, etc) then more easily we will find it is for us to know when to exercise our active actions, and our active consciousness, the one that rationally puts and links things together. It will be a saver in energy and it is rewarded in savoring life.

Background
I understand that in western world, modern world of today, people are mostly taught to look at the active parts of our life and to try embracing life fully through the activity of consciousness. Through the creative force we have within us. Not realizing that the passive way of consciousness, the one we surrender to. The one where ideas flow, where things move accordingly to life itself. That the one where all things have a way of their own needs to be also exercised into full awareness. Not realizing this, we tend to miss out on things that are there for us because of the over exercise of the need for control. We miss out on things that are waiting as gifts of life to ease the living and flow, thrive in it. We have let generations to grow mindlessly to the natural intelligence of life, to think only that they can just count on the intelligence of their own. Creating artificial flows of some sort and structures resistant to it to take us around the egoistic world. Active efforts putted to use because we have lost the connection to surrender and flow. Unaware of our own, the within ones, flow with life, earth and simple pleasures, tastes and laughters in light and love. And simultaneously unaware of earths life cycles and environmental flow, we have denied the practice of passive consciousness. Where active consciousness surrenders to take it all, in this most easy and interesting, broader way of intelligence that has become a stranger and a foreigner to our conscious activity: the Meditative State. And in result our brains have lost the ability to do so engage with reality in a non active controlling way. If our brain is like a muscle we have lost that part of the muscle that creates that state of allowance to letting it flow. We have just exercised the active part of our brains, the male, the yang, the left part, the one that is mostly hyper charged and tensed up. And so the right part of our brain, it is not dead, not asleep or relaxed, but overly tensed up for being constantly judged and rationally questioned, when things in life are just as they are and not to be understood so rationally or put into tangible words. As a yoga instructor in class, and in myself throughout my journey, I can see clearly how more easy it is to expect that we are supposed to be activating a couple of muscles than we are to relax them. Though to hold a meditative state for a long period of time, in a free conscious flow, one needs to develop strength at the core of ones body.

Results
All this activity we have been taught to do since early times. All this exercise of the mind. The rational activity on demand and the lack of time and motivation allowed and given to a child for them to sit and connect with themselves, to watch observe and understand life as it is with no labels, or boxes. Has led to create an automatic set reactions in the mind of people throughout their lives, which reflects the initial mentality of the tutors, that is of resistance. An over load of resistance to live and embrace life. Fear is magnetized to everything and everywhere. Lack of confidence to hear instincts and intuition. In this form of so much resistance to flow we laid the perfect bed for fear to set in. We know that is easy to let go, might not be the easiest part, the first step is always defiant but the flow that follows it is incredibly impressive. It’s a non stop of a sense of thriving. Some of us after that, are overwhelmed in going with the flow and cut back into a mode of resistance to get back together and never return flowing because we forgot the fun in going. But there is a balance between that sense of resistant set back and flowing freely that we have to find. That is our awareness in actions and that is also our brain in full activity. So we just need breaks and exercise. Both sides of our brains, resisting and letting go, have to be exercised until perfect balance.
“Simplicity contains truth. (…) The best way to get to simplicity is to stop thinking of best ways and in worst ways of getting there.”, Chuang Tse.

Why the state of Resistance
Decided to write this to reflect and acknowledge what is right. What is the need of resistance? Why is there so much resistance to flow? Is it necessary? Why is there so much of it that covers the flow of life? How often is fear dressed in resistance and vice versa? As I started writing, as you can read, I realized there is probably a right amount of the quality of resistance we can use for the benefit of our lives. But sadly we are in a over flow of it. Resistance rules it all. Confined paths to thick walls on each side diminishes the horizons of one and leads to an illusion of freedom. A false sense of freedom often plagued with fear. Once I was doing a job picking grapes in south France, near Bordeaux, and as the farm owner was driving to the next crop we were to harvest in we were passing next to these woods deep in those valleys by the side of the road. She was from there and lived all her life there since little girl. The vineyards were inherited. She told us in that moment that when she was a little girl she was told there were ferocious violent wolves living in those woods, and she never got near them, the wolves nor the woods. I asked if there are really wolves there, in a tone of awe, and she said that she actually never saw one, maybe was not true but just what elders used to tell her. I felt this fear in her, restrained her from enjoying those woods and wondering in the forest. A tale to hold and control.

Who/ what performs it
Overuse of resistance and self restraint can only come from a place of Ego. Only an unbalanced ego can create such an action of individualization and marking the territory of one. Because the abundant flow of universe and life is a natural flow that touches all with no restraints. It’s though, the individual self that has to allow to be touched by the Flow. Resistance unbalanced use creates more the sense of Ego within the crowd scenario. A balanced Ego resists and recognizes itself, while it allows the cosmic flow in.

Resistance of an Ego to embrace the whole absolute cosmos promotes self withdrawal. We can observe self withdrawal from two perspectives: self withdrawal within a group context and self withdrawal from meeting our potential. Both are interconnected. Self withdrawal within a group context, happens with a enormous resistance to engaging with our environment. From connecting with nature’s elements to any societal relationship demands, family, partners, teachers or students. Withdrawal from connection, in the name of fear of the unknown and believe that aloneness is enough. Self withdrawal from meeting our potential has to do with within us abstaining ourselves from inner depth and worth. Too proud in learning new things. Often I see it as a form of denial of inner challenges that self development demands, in front of which one freezes and sits back from owning its potential.
This kind of self withdrawal, this resistance to life and living is filled with force and strength channeled towards an independent stream of self, an ego. Force is used to build thick walls of isolation, instead of forming strong webs of inner and outer connection. One in such resistance creates of this isolation act a shelter to its own self. Sheltering its ego in pride resistance and suiting it in comfortable domes that only limitedly can quench ones thirst for life. This leads to further confusion and disconnection. One in this resistant mode, applying such a force, promotes fatigue, and harder it gets to move away from the shelter. Frozen in the shelter of the mind. Lacking energy eventually all is left is to see the shelter cracking down, naturally occurring. We can observe this happening from the scale of a being to a group, such as corporations or whole nations. The conventional tendency to attempt to heal from this is the taking of outsourced artificial supplements to try fill ones inner void. And we can imagine how unsustainable it is. How much damages it can do to our beings environment, from the scale of our body to that of natures ecosystem… Physically it manifests as loss of control of our own flow. Meaning the loss of the control, even if it was happening subconsciously, of breath and blood circulation, etc… leading to many other illnesses. Illnesses preventing the flow of our bodies and their thriving in life.

Erosion
Visualizing the over used resistance. I see a foot on the floor sinking in the ground, eroding the soil and going underground. The lack of awareness towards the balance between Resistance and Flow in ones life leads us to an unfulfilled life, and is a proof of lack of sensitivity into our own living. Too much flow can just lead us astray in a the wrong direction, stubborn and falsely positively self assured, just knocking things down and not listening nor learning. Too much resistance in life might let us in fatigue, lazy, falsely negatively self assured, giving space for fear and undermining our growth and potential.

***
The universe is Divine balance and whatever we do, we act from it, if we find it within ourselves. And we find it in ourselves, we see the presence of its balance all around us. Relaxed and firm. Being the channeled and the channel. In Flow and Resistance, we promote forever pure resilience, to spring us back into our ever blissful shape even if through tumultuous changes.

05.09.2019
Sérgio Ramos

Divinity [EN]

http://ashtangayoganazare.weebly.com/blog/divinity-en

http://ashtangayoganazare.weebly.com/blog/divinity-en#comments

Uncategorized

The question is should we rise up to divinity or should it ‘just’ come to us. We could say to divinity state “hey, if you are so good and whole, why don’t you come over, from all your pervading sources, and divine me up”. It certainly doesn’t sound so divine of us if we just indolently claim our wish to become more fulfilled in life and acquainted with divine knowledge. It’s lazy and pretentious. Let’s call it state of consciousness, this divinity. It is a state that comes from within us, and is of inner radiance. It demands of us a state of allowance in order to liberate ourselves from mental afflictions that obstruct the light of the state of awareness that sees and feels, that is sensitive and strong and is our truest nature.
On the other hand we could say to ourselves “I am going to get it one way or the other, this divine state of conscious awareness”, as we mine into the outer world, like with hammer on stone for this precious jewel state. It’s greedy and ambitious. And this same fire has turned the world upside down to the point that it is what it is today. Same same. This state of consciousness, this divinity it is a state that comes from within us, and is of inner radiance. It demands of us a state of allowance in order to liberate ourselves from mental afflictions that obstruct the light of a state of awareness that sees and feels deep, that is sensitive and strong and is our truest nature.

Through out my journey I’ve seen quite a few, journeying in the spiritual path with different types of temperaments. Different relationships with it. And we can just notice that the way each one relates to their spiritual path does denote the particular perspective one has on these so called for “spiritual journeys” and theirs goals, that many venture into these days. And I talk from my own experience as well. I’ve felt in my own skin these feelings. Often is part of the path: the lack of spiritual maturity and rushing full with desire towards spiritual accomplishments.

Some might experience themselves on a rush, down a fast track tunneling their way towards a better understanding. Towards a state of mind that is more comfortable, stress free and direction free. A state that is obtained by withdrawing from life’s demands. The worldly life’s demands. Having to deal with money, finances, decisions, family members, friends, spouse/husband, intimacy, even our likes and dislikes. Easy, we run away from all this. If to get what we like we become fanatic and insanely eager like those crazy people running into a mall on “Black Friday”, then yeah of course, maybe its better to just leave all mundane pursuits and find a cave in the Himalayas. Like this “Black Friday” situation, there are tons. To get a new release of iPhone or to even go into yoga led class… I mean its everywhere. To get what we want, we people can get blindsided and violent for any little thing. This of course exists up to a macro scale. In corporative and government schemes, of course. It’s bitter. And yes, to meet a divine state of mind many think leaving it all behind is the solution. Leaving family, money accounts, responsibilities at home and heading out to Rishikesh. Changing business cases and law bibles, for a Bhagavad Guita and other sacred texts might be easier of course. But in the end if all you need is new sweater for Christmas, you don’t need to play one against all rugby style into a shop to get it. It can be easier to just leave it all, go shirtless home to your family, they will probably love you anyway. But from there people go all the way to deny any kind of desire. All you had to do is tone it down a little. A divine state of being can exist in going to get a new sweater, for sure.

I’ve felt like running away before. It’s more peaceful when you are alone. No responsibilities. No one to answer to. Life is just what I see and feel. That is the only truth. And other peoples visions cannot interfere in this peaceful stability. But other people exist. Their visions exist. And just because I might be around them doesn’t mean i have to fight ideologically, feel repressed and oppressed. It’s up to me.

It’s typical. The triggers of being back in a mundane society. A civilized capitalistic urban centre, lets say. Surrounded by your relatives and longstanding friends. News and social media. These triggers place an effect on our minds and our state of being. A divine state of mind, balanced and happy it is not designed to emerge from these fabricated settings of modern life. That’s right! And its probably intended to be that way. But to be fair, people and connection with people is a way to feel balanced and stable. It’s easier to have no one - true at some point. But true human connection is seeked for out there everywhere. And it’s the easiest, simplest, just by allowing others to peek into our heart and by keeping self learning. Keeping connected to society to positively raise the vibrations is a work of strength. And, simultaneously, maintaining connected to ourselves positively, acknowledging shadows and allowing the light to shine brighter, to keep frequencies uplifted is a work of strength, love and of great respect. Acknowledging shadows and allowing light to shine brighter is an effect that happens both within and without.
I thought about writing my reflections about this topic once after an experience at a kirtan in Bali. This devotional chanting practice of kirtans always intrigued and challenged me. Getting to be devotional about some entity I didn’t know about and chanting melodies to tones my voice isn’t used to (any singing) within a group context was never an attraction to me. But the ongoing flow of the repetitive simple chants always ended up affecting my mind into a more meditative, relaxed, enthusiast, spirited self. After this kirtan experience in Bali I considered the affect to be of this spirited self allied with divine state because of all the devas (deities) that are praised along.

Often at kirtans I felt that the calling to engage in out of body experience through a connection to the divine images and sounds. This calling always promoted by the other attendees of the kirtan: dancing ecstatically, swinging while sitting, arms raised, eyes closed, singing enthusiastically, praising all… most of the times that I’ve went to a kirtan I would not just join along. I remember some other kirtan experiences I had in India, where in a daily routine elderly men and women would gather to chant devotionally from the bottom of their heart. It’s rather exceptional to see. Available to any. All could join at the end of their days in a chanting group at their neighborhood temple. It was their meditation and devotional practice. They would come from their home and work daily routines and smoothly integrate this practice into their lives.

In contrast with the other experiences from Bali where mostly westerners would join. I could notice that westerners would use this chanting practice to move away, travel beyond the body or drift to an unknown sense of self, that wether good or bad it would be appreciated due to being some other state. While locals, like the Indians in their neighborhood daily kirtans would rather open themselves to the chant. Nothing exceptional other than being open to chant peacefully in a contemplative state, opening themselves inside out, and vibrate their energy in a chant. There was definitely a more embodied experience of the kirtan. And definitely a practice thinking on a long term practice of it. It can be applied to any spiritual practices.

In Bali after I remembered this from before, I got back and experienced a kirtan in a different way. Instead of chanting to move away with the vibrational frequencies of my voice, I would be present in me, in my body and the vibrations of my voice would just quietly shake my body, like dusting off some inner dense particles, and make way inside for the most divine of the expressions of the universe to come in towards my home, my body and myself. It started in the beginning to be just sitting, being fully present with myself, touching my knees and my face, aware of my breathing, watching the people and the musicians as they come in. The all kirtan I was not letting my self go overly excited or bored to sleep. It was a perfect balance of attention to the words, the melodies, to the feelings that arise in me with such chanted words.

Each chant was vibrating deeply within me. Making ripple effects in my energy body. Instead of me traveling outward. I was doing the opposite, of staying in, with in me. Seeing yoga happen within me, allowing divinity to join me. Happily seeing myself like taking the gods by the hand and showing them, and making a little tour to them into my little humble home, of the mental, emotional, physical home of mine. Not taking myself to a higher vibration but, raising my vibration, not leaving anything behind. In a beautiful way I felt like making space for god within me. To be a channel and a vessel for divinity within me. This only possible with the realization that all is divine. That I am that. We all are. That was the realization that allowed divinity to manifest it self in our dimensional level, bodily level. It was an experience of embodiment of such statement. And an opportunity to seed in my mind the door to this state that is beyond my minds understanding.

In this way I inspired myself to see my practices, ultimately, as practices to connect with the divine. As allowing myself to be connected with cosmic influences. On the contrary to using the practices to exit this reality and travel to a divine state. Making a bridge, connecting both worlds the material and the divine is a mission here for all to fulfill in our journey. At some point a mission long discouraged, said to be impossible but the world today is awaken to dispute this false notions. It is up to us alone in the here and now. I say, and this is the purpose of this article. It is up to us to allow ourselves to take god inside. Inhale. “You self take god inside”, K.
